Craigshill Dental Centre.
Here at Craigshill, we are pleased to offer sedation.
For adult patients who experience dental anxiety that makes dental treatment more difficult. Sedation helps to relax patients during dental procedures and ensures they are comfortable and less anxious. Here’s an overview of the sedation option available:
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
-
- What it is: IV sedation involves administering sedative medication directly into the bloodstream through a vein (typically in the hand or arm).
- How it works: This provides a deep level of sedation, causing the patient to feel deeply relaxed or drowsy, during the procedure. The patient may not remember the procedure afterward.
- When it’s used: IV sedation is typically used where treatment otherwise can’t be completed. It is often used when a higher level of sedation is needed.
How to Access Sedation at CHDC:
-
- Eligibility: Sedation is available for patients who have significant anxiety, dental phobia, or special medical needs that require additional support during treatment. Your dentist will assess your situation to determine whether sedation is appropriate for your dental procedure. You must also be medically fit and well.
- Referral Process: While we offer sedation, if you do not fit our criteria your dentist may refer you to a specialist or hospital where sedation is also available.
- Cost: If you are exempt from NHS charges, sedation for necessary treatments (such as fillings, extractions, or root canal treatment) is covered by the NHS. However, if you pay for dental treatemt sedation is an additional cost approx £130/session. We also offer private sedation sessions, this may be useful if you are having private dental care carried out. The cost for this is £250/hour.
- Safety: All forms of sedation are administered by trained professionals to ensure safety. Before receiving sedation, your dentist will review your medical history to ensure that sedation is appropriate for you.
Key Benefits of NHS Sedation:
-
- Anxiety Reduction: Sedation is ideal for patients with dental phobias or anxiety, allowing them to undergo necessary treatments without distress.
- Comfortable Experience: Sedation can make procedures more comfortable, especially for those undergoing longer or more invasive treatments.
- Improved Access to Care: For patients who may otherwise avoid dental care due to fear or anxiety, sedation opens the door to necessary treatment, improving long-term oral health.
If you are anxious about dental treatments, you should discuss sedation options with your dentist. They will help you determine the most suitable type of sedation based on your needs and the dental work required.
